Sports and Lifestyle Injury

It is a common misconception that sports injury can only happen to sports persons.

I have often heard this in the clinics “doctor I have never played tennis!! Then how come I am having tennis elbow??!!” Amusing as it may sound but the reality is, sports injury often results from repetitive stress or heavier than usual stress focussed on any particular body part.

Lifestyle related injury may also result from:

  1. adoption of incorrect postures for sitting and sleeping

  2. All men & women after crossing 60 years mark should stay under periodic evaluation for sign of weakness in their bones & joints(osteoporosis & osteoarthritis), especially the ones with additional conditions like DM, thyroid disorder & obesity

  3. Use of in incorrect Foot wear

Tennis/ golfer’s elbow

  1. You don’t have to be Roger Federer or Phil Mickelson to have it. Even if you’ve never played a set of tennis or a round of golf, you can still suffer from these elbow injuries. Tennis Elbow and Golfer’s Elbow are both overuse injuries that are caused by any activity that requires repetitive motion of the arm and wrist. The difference between the two conditions lies in where the elbow is inflamed.
  2. Both Tennis Elbow and Golfer’s Elbow are forms of epicondylitis, an inflammation of tendons that attach to the elbow. Tennis Elbow affects the lateral, or outside, epicondyle and Golfer’s Elbow affects the medial, or inside, epicondyle.

Neck / Lower back pain

neck-pain

This is a condition of progressive pain in lower spine or in neck. Low back pain is caused by injury to a muscle (strain) or ligament (sprain). Common causes include improper lifting, poor posture, lack of regular exercise, a fracture, a ruptured disc or arthritis.

Ligament injuries

Ligament can be injured through a sharp change in direction, landing wrong from a jump, or the most common by a blunt force hit to the knee, such as in football tackle. Muscle weakness or incoordination can lead to ligament sprain. All Mild grade, Medium grade, and Severe grade injuries need utmost care and importance to treat.

Shoulder injuries – Cuff & Joints

Ankle/ foot injury

However, men between 15 and 24 years old have higher rates of ankle sprain, compared to women older than age 30 who have higher rates than men. Half of all ankle sprains occur during an athletic activity. But you don't have to be an athlete to turn your ankle and hurt it. Something as simple as walking on an uneven surface can cause a painful, debilitating sprain.

About Knee

The ligament of the knee act as ropes that tie the bones together and ensure smooth walking & movement

The old school thought on knee injury was to wait it out & exercise which is still practiced in some places with less access to technology. But with the advent of modern imaging techniques like MRI & treatment methods like arthroscopic repair, waiting is no longer an option.
